
By decision of the Board of the Central Bank of Armenia, "MIR" card payment system was included in the list of payment and settlement systems.
According to the press service of the Central Bank, "Armenian Card" CJSC payment and settlement organization has been granted permission to participate in "MIR" foreign payment and settlement system.
The project envisages mutual acceptance of cards in infrastructure of the two countries. The pilot will be launched at the end of the season, as well as the issue of joint cards. 16 banks have the technical capability to issue such cards, which operate in the ArCa system.
It should be noted that on June 3, 2016 an agreement was signed between "Armenian Card" and "NPCS" companies, which provides mutual service of ArCa and Mir cards. The pilot launch of the project is scheduled for summer 2017.
According to the Central Bank of Armenia, as of January 1, 2017, there were 1 570 758 active cards in Armenia (annual decrease of 9.1%). Including, the national ArCa cards were 521 273 (annual decline of 5%). As of the same date, there were 1 432 ATMs and 6971 POS-terminals, of which 827 were placed in banks. In 2016, the volume of plastic transactions made to 1.4 trillion drams, of which 361 billion with ArCa local cards.
