World Savings Day is celebrated in different countries around the world on the last day of October. Despite its unusual name, that's an official holiday. In 1989, it was fixed by the UN Directive.
The history of the Savings Day is related to the First International Savings Banks Congress in Milan in 1924, attended by representatives of banks from 29 countries. Various financial and credit issues were discussed during the Congress. However, the most important event took place on the last day of the Congress on October 31, when in commemoration of this event it was decided to set up a new "World Savings Day" and celebrate it on that day.
Savings Day in Armenia has been celebrating since 2012. Today on this occasion the Deposit Guarantee Fund, the Union of Banks of Armenia and the Central Bank have organized an event.
A meeting devoted to this day meeting took place at the Armenian State University of Economics. The event was attended by university students, professors and lecturers.
The main speaker of the meeting was Narek Ghazaryan, head of the Real Sector Analysis Department of the Central Bank of Armenia, who made a presentation on "The Effects of Savings on Long-Term Economic Growth". The purpose of the presentation was to present future economists the link between savings and economic growth.
