The British branch of the Spanish bank Santander, one of the ten largest in the UK, announced the closure of 140 branches in the country. According to the credit institution, 1270 people are under threat of dismissal.

The bank explained its decision by increasing the number of customers using mobile platforms and reducing the need for physical offices.

“The methods of obtaining banking services, which are chosen by our clients, have seriously changed lately. recently undergone major changes. More and more customers are using mobile and online channels. As a result, we had to make some difficult decisions about low-burdened divisions and those offices that are close to each other, ” said Susan Allen, head of private and legal services.

It is noted that the company is negotiating with trade unions and hopes to redistribute about one-third of the staff of the closing branches to other positions. In total, Santander in the UK currently has 806 branches, which serve 20,000 employees.
