The German automaker Volkswagen AG was recognized as the world's largest automaker in 2018. The company ranks first for the third year in a row.

Japanese Toyota on Wednesday reported a 2 percent increase in sales - up to 10.6 million cars.

The indicator also includes sales of the Daihatsu and Hino brands.

Earlier in January, Volkswagen reported an increase in sales to 10.8 million vehicles. In addition to the brand of the same name, the German automaker owns the Audi, Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini, Porsche, SEAT, Skoda passenger cars, Ducati motorcycles, MAN trucks, Scania and Volkswagen Commercial.

Another Japanese automaker, Nissan Motor Co., in 2018 sold 5.65 million vehicles.
