The central bank of Italy must maintain its independence, it is important for the economic development of the country. This was reported to journalists by the vice-president of the European Commission Valdis Dombrovskis, according to ANSA.
Earlier it was reported that the leaders of the two ruling parties in Italy, the vice-premier Matthew Salvini and Luigi Di Mayo talked about changing the composition of the Central Bank. Di Mayo blocked the appointment of one of the deputy chairmen of the bank, stating that the Central Bank required major changes, and his current leadership is responsible for the country's financial problems over the past few years, mainly for increasing the number of deceived depositors of failed banks.
Salvini, in turn, said that the central bank needed a "zeroing", rather than an individual permutation.
He later clarified his position, noting that the decision will be made by the Prime Minister and the Minister of Finance. He is in favor of fundamental changes, not specific candidates. Salvini added that the thesis on the importance of independence of the Central Bank can be supported, but independence should not imply irresponsibility.
Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte reported that consultations are underway in the government on the issue of the Central Bank. Minister of Finance and Economy Giovanni Tria called for maintaining the independence of the Central Bank. According to one version, the cause of the conflict between the government and the Central Bank is the desire of ministers to sell part of the national gold reserves (about 20 billion euros) and thus fulfill their promise not to raise VAT.
